The Michael Colliery Mining Disaster
We're now passing the entrance to one of the area's largest former coal mines, the Michael Colliery. On September 9, 1967, a devastating underground fire broke out, trapping miners. Alarms were raised, and in the chaos, miners formed human chains, grabbing onto belts or each other to guide their way to safety. Despite a 36-hour rescue effort, nine miners tragically died, and three bodies were never recovered. The disaster led to the mine’s closure, the loss of 2,000 jobs, and left a lasting impact on the local community.
