Point 12

The large, turreted sand coloured building is the National Bar. Built around 1900 this building has had a variety of uses over the years, from restaurant to theatre. Today, it is apartments.

Across the main road, you will see Methil Train Station – that’s right, another station! We saw the docklands railway earlier when we saw the old iron bridge. Opened in 1887 as an extension to the Leven line, the railway mostly carried coal and other freight, though passenger services were offered too. The track only ran as far as Thornton, so all change here to travel onwards. Enough track covered this area to hold a massive 516 wagons! That’s a lot of coal.

Methil Brae
The road to opposite the National Bar is Methil Brae, one of the main thoroughfares of the area. This is how it used to look.
