Point 4

In this open area, Hercules the bear was here in the 1980s.

At the far end of the clearing you see 2 large ash trees, always prized as firewood and for making tool handles. You are now entering the Glen’s main woodland area.

Hercules the Bear
Hercules was a North American grizzly bear, born in captivity in February 1975. He was adopted as a cub by Scottish wrestler Andy Robin and his wife, Maggie. Andy initially bought Hercules to train as a wrestling partner, which was part of a unique act they performed. Hercules became a celebrity in the 1980s. He appeared in various television shows, commercials, and even a James Bond film ("Octopussy"). His gentle nature and ability to perform tasks usually not associated with wild animals made him a popular figure in the media. In 1980, Hercules made headlines when he escaped while filming on a Scottish island. He was missing for 24 days, sparking a massive search operation. His disappearance was widely covered, and his eventual capture was a relief to his owners and fans. After his escapade and continued public appearances, Hercules lived a relatively peaceful life with the Robins. He died in 2000 at the age of 25, which is a ripe old age for a grizzly bear. His life was marked by unusual interactions with humans and a level of fame that few animals ever achieve. (Image: Fife Today)
