As you stand here and then walk on down the path with the peaceful sound of the Scoonie Burn on your right, imagine what the sounds and smell might have been 100 years ago – men shouting at the coal pit and engine house on the slope above you to your left; smoke and other industrial smells; and the clattering of horses pulling carts full of ochre down towards the main road.

Moving on down the path, look out for the massive tree roots exposed from the beech trees which are over 100 years old. Even huge trees can cling on to rock in places where the soil is very thin. Why not do a selfie next them?
