Point 5

Dotted along the Main Street in Lower Largo there are old wells which produced fresh spring water for the villagers into the 20th century when, initially water was pumped from Leven and by 1892 a reservoir at Carlhurlie was providing fresh water for the area.

There are two springs still in existence, one being behind this locked door and the other is on private property further east on Main Street.

“I was sent with my sister to collect water from the well across the road in the summer as it was lovely and cold and tasted wonderful compared to the water from the tap” A quote from Douglas Horne who was born in Main Street in 1929.
